Börn n Children Icelandair’s Special Children Travel Fund was founded by former Icelandair CEO Sigurður Helgason and his wife Peggy Helgason on the First Day of Summer, April 24, 2003, in support of children with long-term illnesses and children who live in difficult circumstances in Iceland and other countries. Allocations from the fund are made twice a year , on the First Day of Summer in April and on the First Day of Winter in October. Since its establishment in 2003, around 700 children have been able to go on a dream vacation with their families, so in total there have been almost 3,500 people traveling with Special Children Travel Fund. Special Children can pick any Icelandair destination they want, but Orlando is by far the most popular. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir , former President of Iceland and the world’s first democratically elected female head of state, is the fund’s patron. She is also on the board and usually attends every allocation. The fund is financed through Icelandair’s founding contribution, donations by members of Icelandair Saga Club (who can donate an unlimited number of frequent flyer miles), and through surplus change that passengers place in envelopes in the seat pockets of Icelandair aircraft. Also, all profits from the Special Angel teddy bear that Icelandair passengers can buy from Icelandair’s Saga Shop Collection go towards the fund. It’s a popular and memorable present for people of all ages—it’s so soft! I find that my work is a privilege . It’s rewarding, but it can also be emotionally difficult sometimes.
