Efling members in Flóamennt , staff of the state and nursing homes, were avid attendees of Icelandic classes provided by their workplaces, especially the staff of Landspítali University Hospital . The institutions of the City of Reykjavík mainly apply for grants for the specialized training of staff. The training mostly has to do with, among other things, the care of children with specific diagnoses and safety matters. The heart of the organizing work of Efling has to do with union representatives and an emphasis is placed on educating them during special courses. The obliga- tions of union representatives, collective agreement negotiations, occupational safety visits, worker safety, self-empowerment, the basics of economics, the role of the labor movement and analysis of paychecks. Félagsmálaskóli Alþýðu conducts the courses along with Efling. During the year, 131 union representatives attended a course given by Efling, whereof 92 attended the first union representative course of four. The professional courses of Efling remain popular, including courses in care work, preschools and cook- ing. Nine such courses were given and attended by 109 members. Five end of employment courses were given, as well as six other, shorter ones, among them a first aid course, a course on self-empowerment and the ever-popular course on rights and responsibilities at work, which often packed the house. EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS The educational work of Efling proceeded as in previ- ous years, except for the changes to the union rep- resentative courses. The content of the courses was brought up to date and the arrangement was altered, while a decision was made to conduct the courses in Icelandic and English. The division’s staff collaborated on an educational campaign for secondary school students under the heading Ég læt ekki svindla á mér ( I won’t let anyone cheat me ). Nine secondary schools in total accepted the offer and the educational material was also published on the web by Efling. An open lecture was held where the economists Alexander Guschanski and Rafael Wildauer, lectur- ers at the University of Greenwhich, covered the positive and diverse economic effects of equality in September. Yearly events such as the Christmas dance, the Christmas market, the coffee party for seniors, the May 1 st coffee party and the day tour also took place. SVINDL á mér!
